June 16 TechEd Is Almost Over! Do IT Again. There were so many things to see and do at TechEd 2006, not only at the show, but in Boston. (The party at Fenway Park last night was awsome!) Unfortunately, my ISV had problems and my site shut down on Tuesday! No web, no email.
So what to do? Well, do it all over again! Specifically, one of the concerns that I received from folks doing the Hands-On Labs was that there were more great labs than they had time to do. So I spent some of my free time looking for the virtual machine images of the labs to take back to Washington, DC. I have many of them, and am planning to run a few Hands-On Labs nights at ICI Systems in downtown DC this summer. (EMail me at JFDausman@ICISys.com and I'll put you on the list to be notified.) We'll have pizza, sodas, labs ... and a great time. June 10 TechEd 2006 Boston Is Cool!I'm here and I'm psyched! Right now I'm previewing the TechEd Hands-On Labs that I'll be helping attendees through. I'm working in the Business Intelligence section of the Labs. Talk about cool. One of the neatest things about TechEd is the people I get to meet and work with. It's an amazing amount of brain power all under one roof. Be there ... or be square! June 07 I Am In Boston!Hey! We (my 14 year old son and I) made it to Boston yesterday evening. Rain, rain, rain. And every 20 seconds or so ... wind! Otherwise known as horizontal rain.
Check the weather for Boston before coming. My son, in his infinite teenage wisdom, did not bring sweatshirt, jacket or coat. And the temperature has been as high as 65F.
10 Day forcast for Boston (zip code = 02110):

end of TechEd 2006 Boston
See you all soon. I'll be one of the Technical Learning Guides in the Hands-On Lab area. Come and learn something!
March 08 TechEd UpdateOnce again Microsoft has let me slip through the cracks and be a Technical Learning Guide (last year's term was "proctor") for the Hands-On Labs. The site is up and running for TechEd 2006 ... so take a look at this year's offerings: http://www.microsoft.com/events/teched2006/default.mspx
January 06 Bill Gates attends MIT (sort of)So ... what to do at TechEd 2006? Actually, you don't have to wait till June to see technology in the Boston area. Just link to MIT-World, a site hosting downloadable lectures from MIT. The lectures are searchable and cover a wide range of innovation and technology issues. Even Bill Gates is listed ... his topic ... Software Breakthroughs: Solving the Toughest Problems in Computer Science. This talk was given on February 26, 2004.
My favorite part is the 'About the Speaker' section of the linking page where it says "He dropped out of Harvard in his junior year." You've got to admire a guy who realizes he went to the wrong school in Cambridge and does something about it!
December 21 Red Sox Baseball at TechEd 2006So, when my youngest found out I was planning on going to Boston in June he promptly asked if he could go along. I thought it was touching ... he wants to be with Dad. Actually, he just wants to see a game in Fenway. My fault though, he picked up his love of baseball and the Red Sox from me.
To get to Fenway, take the Green Line "subway" to Kenmore Square. Hike south on Brookline Avenue a couple of blocks (over I-90) and you're there! You can get a drill-down map of the transit system, also known as the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA, or "The T") online. There's also a nice map of the area on SportsEvents.net.
To get tickets, go to www.RedSox.com. The Sox have three games against the Texas Rangers scheduled for Friday, June 9; Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 ... so you might want to get to Boston a little before TechEd. (If you're coming up from the south, you might want to see them in evening games at Yankee Stadium on June 5 through 8.)
December 20 Wild and Wireless at MITYou think wireless access at TechEd is a big deal? Try MIT. With over 2,800 access points it is "one of the most pervasive wireless Internet networks on earth". That alone is interesting enough, but can you also dynamically get:
In a previous blog I mentioned the MIT Museum as a place to visit during TechEd 2006 in Bostion. You can also view the dynamically updated wireless map from there. A couple of articles on MIT's wireless network can be found at WirelessNewsFactor.com and GlobeTechnology.com.
If you want your information (and some cool pictures) straight from the engineer's mouth, check out http://iSPOTS.mit.edu/. By the way, the MIT Museum has lots of other cool stuff and is worth a visit. Don't think you'll have time for a visit? Then visit the Museum's E-Gallery online! (They should pay me for the plugs!)
September 15 TechEd Boston EateriesFrom my college days in Cambridge, and from taking my daughter on college visits to Boston, there are a couple of places you may want to take your friends to when attending TechEd 2006. Two of the places in downtown Boston, near City Hall and Fanuel Hall, are Durgin-Park and the Union Oyster House.
Durgin-Park is probably the most famous restaurant in Boston. Fromer's guide says of the restaurant "For huge portions of delicious food, a rowdy atmosphere where CEOs share tables with students, and run-ins with the famously cranky waitresses, people have poured into Durgin-Park since 1827. It's everything it's cracked up to be -- a tourist magnet that attracts many locals, where everyone's disappointed when the waitresses are nice, as they often are. " If your group wants to do some entertaining ... they have private function rooms available. They are noted for their prime rib and typical New England dishes (they have some of the receipes online.) I always go there when I'm in Bean-town. Tip: if you want to avoid a long wait, go into their bar, order a drink, and ask your waitress for a table upstairs.
The Union Oyster House, established in 1826, is the oldest resturant in the United States. (Its shellfish and seafood are considerably fresher though!) When my girlfriend (later wife) graduated from college her parents and I took her there to celebrate. They also have private function rooms. Great seafood.
August 19 Lizards of M.C. Escher Soft PuzzleOK all you MCT's out there ... remember the Bill~IT-Hero~Steve soft foam puzzle you got in your IT Hero kit at TechEd 2005? Of course you do! You may even still have it if a) you didn't give the pieces to someone building a humongous chain or b) your kids didn't loose the pieces. Well, when you come up to Boston for TechEd 2006 stop by the MIT Museum and purchase a more artistic and educational soft foam puzzle for your kids, the Lizards of M.C. Escher Soft Puzzle. By the way, the MIT Museum has lots of cool stuff and is worth a visit.
Don't think you'll have time for a visit? Then visit the Museum's E-Gallery online!
